Calder White lives in the cold, clear waters of Lake Superior, the only brother in a family of murderous mermaids. To survive, Calder and his sisters prey on humans, killing them to absorb their energy. But this summer the underwater clan targets Jason Hancock out of pure revenge. They blame Hancock for their mother's death and have been waiting a long time for him to return to his family's homestead on the lake. Hancock has a fear of water, so to lure him in, Calder sets out to seduce Hancock's daughter, Lily. Easy enough—especially as Calder has lots of practice using his irresistable good looks and charm on ususpecting girls. Only this time Calder screws everything up: he falls for Lily—just as Lily starts to suspect that there's more to the monsters-in-the-lake legends than she ever imagined. And just as his sisters are losing patience with him

To be honest I honestly think that this is my first mermaid book that I have ever read. I can't recall exactly, but there hasn't been a mermaid book that I've read and i have to say I really enjoyed this. The book gave me shivers at seeing the deadly said of mermaids.

After the death of his mother, Calder and his sisters are targeting Jason Hancock for a debt that has to be paid, because the merpeople never forget a debt.

Surprisingly, I actually liked Calder. He came off as arrogant and a little moody in some instances but there was something about him that I liked. I especially liked it when he was starting to connect with Lily. Even though he had dark intentions the author makes no short work of expressing just how different he is from his bloodthirsty sisters. The humanity that seeped from him was an obvious sign that Calder would be a likeable character.

He had a lot of faults, especially when it came to handling his sisters. But I think that's what makes this story so fascinating. The choice he has to make between his family, because those types of bonds are strong, so strong that Calder is compelled to follow them each year.

I really want to see the way things play out in this book series. Believe me when I say that these mermaids are nothing like what most people grew up with in Ariel.
