When sixteen-year-old Tessa Gray crosses the ocean to find her brother, her destination is England, the time is the reign of Queen Victoria, and something terrifying is waiting for her in London's Downworld, where vampires, warlocks and other supernatural folk stalk the gaslit streets. Only the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the world of demons, keep order amidst the chaos.

Kidnapped by the mysterious Dark Sisters, members of a secret organization called The Pandemonium Club, Tessa soon learns that she herself is a Downworlder with a rare ability: the power to transform, at will, into another person. What’s more, the Magister, the shadowy figure who runs the Club, will stop at nothing to claim Tessa's power for his own.

Friendless and hunted, Tessa takes refuge with the Shadowhunters of the London Institute, who swear to find her brother if she will use her power to help them. She soon finds herself fascinated by—and torn between—two best friends: James, whose fragile beauty hides a deadly secret, and blue-eyed Will, whose caustic wit and volatile moods keep everyone in his life at arm's length . . . everyone, that is, but Tessa. As their search draws them deep into the heart of an arcane plot that threatens to destroy the Shadowhunters, Tessa realizes that she may need to choose between saving her brother and helping her new friends save the world. . . . and that love may be the most dangerous magic of all

It's not a secret that Cassandra Clare is my woman; The Mortal Instrument series is one of the best books that have walked into my life. And now I can get more!! While I'm waiting for the movie and the last book in TMI, I started this series. I told myself that I wouldn't read it until I finished TMI, but I had bought it and I couldn't just let it sit there on my Nook, along with the other unread books on my Nook, completely neglected. And not to mention I was going through Shadowhunter withdrawal and they say that patience is virtue (sadly I'm going to hell because patience is not in my vocabulary) so took my chances and just started this novel.

And I loved it! Cassandra Clare is amazing in just about everything and you can still hear the wonderful voice that she presents in TMI even here.

Tessa was amazing. She took everything that happened to her in stride, even discovering who she was.

It took me a moment (and possibly some online research) in order to remind myself who was who and what family names were still there. Like the Lightwoods and the Wayland and Heronald, and all the other names that I can't think of right now.

There was action in every corner and the story gets complicated and intriguing at every step of the way. I was biting my nail and hoping for the best. I was freaking out (and it didn't help that I was reading this at night) and overall, I just didn't want the story to end!

Will is a lot like Jace (stubborn, loving in the most difficult way) but there were moments of him that I was really shocked by the way he behaved. He was like Jace only ten times worse. It was like he refused to be loved or let anyone know him. I think it'll be really interesting getting into his mind.

Jem and Tessa and Charlotte were my favorite three. I absolutely couldn't stand Jessamine. I tried to understand her and see it from her point of view, but it was not easy looking passed her selfish nature.

And like always, Clare has a way to keep us all on our toes. Some of the surprises were just that, surprises. I didn't see a lot of it coming and even now as I tried to come up predictions for book two, I have a feeling that Clare will lead me down one road and just when I think I'm getting to the end of it...BAM! Hits me with something I was not prepared for.

I'm so excited and I just wish this series weren't a trilogy (what can I say, Clare spoils us too much).

I'm so giddy right now I can't even explain. At least I won't have to wait a year for the last book (unlike some other series *cough*TMI*cough*) so it'll be interesting to see how things will work out!

You get into Will's mind in the next book, and a little bit into Jem's . The 2nd book is even better!
