Black Dawn by Rachel Caine

Title: Black Dawn
Author: Rachel Caine
Info: Website | Twitter | Facebook
Release Date: May 1st, 2012
Publisher: NAL Trade
Pages: 367
Format: Paperback
Acquired: Bought
Interest: Series
Others in the Series: Glass House, The Dead Girl's Dance, Midnight Alley, Feast of Fools, Lord of Misrule, Carpe Corpus, Fade Out, Kiss of Death, Ghost Town, Bite Club, and Last Breath
Age Group: Young Adult

Ever since the draug—mysterious creatures that prey on vampires—took over Morganville, the lives of student Claire Danvers and her friends have been thrown into turmoil. Most of the town’s residents have evacuated, but Claire, Shane, Eve and Michael have chosen to stay and fight.Using the city’s water system to spread, the draug have rapidly multiplied. Things in Morganville look grim, especially since vampire Amelie—the town founder—has been infected by the master draug’s bite.

Now, if Claire and her friends don’t figure out how to cure Amelie and defeat the draug, it looks like Morganville will become little more than a ghost town…

Morganville is falling apart, but Rachel Caine is truly building something even cooler.

Things are heating up or watering up now with the draug slowly taking over Morganville. Now that the gang and pretty much the whole time are cornered up, an attack has to be placed in order to take back their town.

I still love how Rachel Caine is mixing it up by changing point of views. Unlike the other ones that started out slowly with one point of view here and there, and then giving whole chapters, but still focusing heavily on Claire, to giving a lot of equal time to many of the characters.

Things between Eve and Michael are a little rocky, Amelie is falling deeper and deeper into her sickness, Oliver has sort of taken over/fawning over Amelie, Shane is protective, Myrinn might be in love with Claire, and the said Claire is trying to make it another day.

Yep. Caine knows how to keep the interest in the series. I love how she added this, just so effortlessly, while still closing up what remind of the last few story-lines.

I'm very excited the way things are going. The story is getting more and more complex, the characters more interesting (or in the case of Eve, more annoying) and I am truly sad knowing that the series is coming to an end soon, because I don't know what I'll do knowing that I won't have my favorite quartet to look forward to.

Le sigh. You win some you lose some, I guess.

Bite Club by Rachel Caine

Title: Bite Club
Author: Rachel Caine
Info: Website | Twitter | Facebook
Release Date: May 3rd, 2011
Publisher: NAL Trade
Pages: 340
Format: Paperback
Acquired: Bought
Interest: Series
Others in the Series: Glass House, The Dead Girl's Dance, Midnight Alley, Feast of Fools, Lord of Misrule, Carpe Corpus, Fade Out, Kiss of Death, and Ghost Town
Age Group: Young Adult

After discovering that vampires populate her town, college student Claire Danvers knows that the undead just want to live their lives. But someone else wants them to get ready to rumble.

There's a new extreme sport getting picked up on the Internet: bare—knuckle fights pitting captured vampires against each other—or humans. Tracking the remote signal leads Claire—accompanied by her friends and frenemies—to discover that what started as an online brawl will soon threaten everyone in Morganville...

Just when I thought that Rachel Caine could not surprise me more, she does it again, but this time two fold. Not only are we reading about Claire and all her adventures, but now we even get Shane's point of view. And things are getting a little tense.

The whole book kept me on edge, as Shane fell further and further down a road of no return, while Claire scrambles to find a way to bring him back. When a new gym opens up, things with Shane begin to change as he begins to change.

And an old enemy returns, one that many faithful readers would be very familiar with.

As much as I love this book, I was also starting to get irritated with Eve. For once, I was really wishing that she wasn't around because she just annoyed me and I have a bad feeling that she will continue to irk me for the rest of the book series.

Every time she appeared, I just had to roll my eyes because she was a thorn on my side.

Besides that, I honestly liked the book. A lot of things in Morganville are going to change and I'm a little excited to see just what happens!

Bound to the water bound to land, a Siren’s soul will never be safe on either side of the ocean’s surface. Hidden beneath the rolling waves lies the secret to Theia’s past and as she unveils each haunting truth, she realizes the last seventeen years of her life have been a lie. Now, drawn into a mysterious new world and with nowhere to turn, Theia must place her trust in Luc, a beautiful boy who stops her heart with each dazzling smile, but even his unearthly charm can’t hide the truth—he has secrets— dark secrets binding him to his world—an underwater world where Theia will never belong—a world determined to destroy her soul.

I have to say, I don't read many books on sirens but when I do, I am rarely disappointed. This book was no exception to the fact.

When Theia is kidnapped by strangers, unsure of why or what they will do to her, they throw her into the water, and she's saved by Luc, the main love interest. Soon, Theia discovers that not everything is what it seems.

The novel took me in right away. I'm a huge fan of various points of views because, while I am a fan of first person, there's a lot more that goes on with different versions. The changes helped the story a lot and for the most part I felt pulled it together nicely.

I was a fan of Theia. She grew on me rather quickly and I liked seeing the different stages she went through and it helped me a lot, as the reader, understanding her. Daune takes the time to develop her beautifully.

Another thing I am a huge fan of is the mythologies that each author takes the time to develop. I love it even more when they do it right and not confuse the reader. It was a great addition to the tale and cleaned up a lot of questions.

If you aren't a mermaid fan, I recommend you read this because you may just change your opinion on the mermaid mythology. I'm surprised this genre hasn't blown up yet!

How far would you go to save everything you ever loved?

Kaliel was warned about her love for the Ferryman. One day he will marry the land and leave Avristar forever. She doesn't listen, and because of what she is-- a Flame-- one of nine apocalyptic weapons, she sparks a war. In a desperate attempt to save her home and her love, Kaliel tries to awaken Avred, not knowing she may have to make the ultimate sacrifice
I was a little hesitant about reading this series. Not just because it has been a long time since I've read high fantasy, but because I wasn't sure how much I would like this book or not. And, at first, it did feel a little confusing. The author just dives right into the story, with a prologue that doesn't make much sense at first, but as the story goes on and it unravels my confusion lessened and I was able to actually enjoy it!

Kaliel is a Flame, who is in live with a Ferryman. This is something that is heavily looked down upon.

The way the story opens, from the captivating and mysterious entrance, to the way it slowly begins to reveal itself along the way made the imagery and the world come to life. Kaliel originally appeared as gentle as a rose to me (like the way the book cover pictures) but as it continued I saw the way she was just as wild as a tiger.

I had a small problem connecting with Krishani, mainly because he just didn't seem like the kind of guy that I could picture a girl with. But his motivation to prove himself stuck out at me a lot and I found myself warming up, but just a little. I wasn't completely crazy about him throughout the story.

Either way, with approval or without, the story developed in a fantastical way. Paille created a wonder in this series that I hope more people get to experience. The limits on love, the limits on what is right and wrong in this world - all those boundaries are pushed in this tale.

Sick of vampires? So is Meena Harper.

But her boss is making her write about them anyway, even though Meena doesn’t believe in them.

Not that Meena isn’t familiar with the supernatural. See, Meena Harper knows how you’re going to die (not that you’re going to believe her; no one ever does).

But not even Meena’s precognition can prepare her for what happens when she meets—then makes the mistake of falling in love with—Lucien Antonescu, a modern-day prince with a bit of a dark side . . . a dark side a lot of people, like an ancient society of vampire-hunters, would prefer to see him dead for.

The problem is, he already is dead. Maybe that’s why he’s the first guy Meena’s ever met that she could see herself having a future with. See, while Meena’s always been able to see everyone else’s future, she’s never been able look into her own.

And while Lucien seems like everything Meena has ever dreamed of in a boyfriend, he might turn out to be more like a nightmare.

Now might be a good time for Meena to start learning to predict her own future . . .

If she even has one

It has been a long time since I read Meg Cabot and I was honestly excited to read this book. Only Meg Cabot could take the entire vampire obsession that was at its height and make it into something funny.

I loved Meena, she was as funny as the other Cabot protagonist that I've read. She is witty and full of good humor. And I loved Lucien. The heat between the two of them makes most love stories just envy with jealousy. I was rooting for them from day one.

And the supporting cast was great. I found most of them believable and incredibly stupid. I mean, so many of them made just the worst mistakes that could have been completely avoided so I couldn't stop myself from thinking just how much I wanted to punch them. But some were hilarious, like Meena's BFF.

I found it very original Meena's gift. It wasn't very predictable and it was really cool. Meena was interesting and the various voices that Cabot presented came out clear.

I am sad to say that I probably won't read the second book, Overbite, or at least I'll check it out in the library and skim it. I have heard pretty bad things about the second book, like it's rush, too short - especially for the nature of this type of book - and the romance is not really there. And not to mention through the reviews I read I have a pretty good idea who Meena ends up with and I am on the other guys team, so yeah.

I can't say that I won't read it, but I won't spend money on it that's for sure. I like this book and the characters as they are now and I don't want that ruined by whatever happens in the second book. Honestly, I wish Cabot had turned this into a trilogy or at least just left this book as a stand-alone. Oh well.

This book was great. It took me awhile to get through and some parts of the storyline I didn't understand, but overall, it was great.

Any Love But Mine by Debbie Davies

The gods forbade her to love, but love is a powerful force. Acacia has been created purely for Eros' pleasure but discovers within moments of being summoned into his presence that he has no interest in her whatsoever. Rejected, she is banished to Earth to serve as Eros' minion with the task of promoting the blissful state of love among all those around her, a state she must never indulge in with a human being herself on pain of immediate destruction. And then comes Josh, someone whose power of attraction over Acacia is so intense she will find it utterly impossible to resist him. But is he human? Is he a god? Or is he a trick of the gods? And what would happen should they kiss?

Well, I had a really rough beginning, I'm going to start with that. I almost put this in my DNF pile since I wasn't feeling it and I was in a little hurry to get through the book. But I'm glad I pushed a little more because I did thoroughly enjoy the rest of the novel.

I'm not too familiar with the story of Eros, so it was interesting watching Davies take on it. Right away I was hoping for the best for Acacia and Josh, but like any good story it took me on a ride. Excitement, pain, love, sadness - all there in one story that just would not stop for anything!

Of course, some characters needed a lot of work because I just didn't understand them, but I decided that it wouldn't let it stop me from enjoying it.

If you are a fan of Greek mythology, which I am, you may enjoy it a lot.

I like that the blurb followed closely to what the story was about instead of the story going off somewhere doing its own thing, dancing, like, "Look at me!" while I'm expecting something completely different.

I'm really glad that Davies let me review this book. It was a lot of fun.

Lover Unleashed by J.R. Ward

Payne, twin sister of the Black Dagger Brother Vishous, suffers a devastating injury, and brilliant human surgeon Manuel Manello is called in to save her. Their attraction is instant, and as powerful as it is dangerous. But as human and vampire worlds collide, a centuries- old score catches up with Payne and puts both her love and her life in jeopardy.

I love this series, I really do. I pretty much ate up the majority of it last year and it was my Best Series of 2012 pick, but something about this book set my teeth on edge. Maybe I just miss the fact that this story didn't focus on the main guys anymore or maybe it was just how all over the place I felt. I know that Ward is trying to set up the next book, but I think she did it just a little too much this time and not giving us, the readers, time to know Manny and Payne.

While the romance was just as hot and steamy, and Manny proved to be just the type of man that would be right for Payne, I did feel like there was too much sex. I would have liked them to connect in another way (and for maybe Manny not to have so many turn on moments - I get it, she's hot, she gets your you-know-what going, but do you have to keep telling us?!). And I get there's a lot of drama in Qhuinn and Blay's life, but we still have another book between this one and them! Maybe that's why I was a little unhappy. Tohr was completely overlooked, even though his book was next and I wouldn't be surprised if I read that book to find out that it was just another bridge book to Qhuinn and Blay, because that's what I feel like this book was, just a bridge book.

Despite my laundry list of problems with this book, I did like it. It took me a little longer than the rest of the books to read (we're talking days instead of hours) I think that Manny and Payne was a little surprising but a good pairing. I wish that Manny had been brought up a few books before (the last we heard of him was in V's book) but like I said I think that Ward is focusing way too much on Qhuinn and Blay.

Not to mention this series is getting really complicated. It feels like Ward has gone away from this war with the Lessers to this war with each other. If the Lessers don't end up killing them, they'll end up killing each other with all the drama that goes on. How many attempts on Wrath's life have there been already? Not to mention the fact that the Lessers were hardly mentioned except for a handful of fighting scenes...this really has turned away from what the first few books introduced me to.

And then there's a new enemy. I didn't like the way things went down between Xcor and Payne. This is a little spoiler, but for a man to spend so many centuries looking for a person and to have things end the way they did between the two, well, can I just say that it was a real let down.

Overall, there wasn't a lot of fighting going on. Just a lot of internal emotions to get resolved. We got way more of V than we did in his book, which surprised me. And am I the only one who was really confused about what was going on with Jose and his partner? According to other reviews I read it was setting up for her Fallen Angels book (which I am horribly behind on) but I just felt like that was something that could have been taken out. Almost like filler pages, because if this was for the Fallen Angels book why couldn't she just leave it on her Fallen Angels book? I'm sorry, Ward, but we know that the BDB and the FA series will cross, they take place in the same city for Goodness sake!

And last, I understand how a long and complicated series like this things tend to get...mistaken. I read from an interview Ward did that she has made mistakes as the series goes on, but in this book I felt like her editor was not paying too much attention to what was going on. If I didn't love this series so much I probably would have taken a red pen and corrected everything and then my book wouldn't look so pretty. There were things that she mentioned in passed books that she brought back, only she completely disagreed with herself or something. The big one that I noticed is that in one book she mentioned that Qhuinn was color blind, yet he could see color just fine in this book. And there were other things like that that she did that had me stopping and thinking, "Wait, that's not what you said in (insert book title here). What the heck are you doing?"

I'm not going to give this book a five, because of the mess I just mentioned above. I should be giving this book a two or even a one for everything that was going on, but I can't argue with her writing style and the way she's able to keep the readers attention. And somehow through this mess she's able to still make the reader care about these characters and what's going on.

I know she said that she would keep writing this series as long as they were to continue to sell, and I know that she has a lot of books coming up, and I am very excited for them all, I just hope that for these future books she and/or her editor look through them with a fine comb. Even write up a journal with what's been going on or something, because if she continues like this the books would probably fall to pieces and lose their readership.

I do wish that the women would start playing a bigger part. I'm glad that there are some women that are fighting and I'm glad that Ward mentions them, but I do wish that they would become a bigger part of the story and that they say things. I think Ehlena was mentioned way too much, yet she never said a word. That just got me a little upset.

And this review is much longer than I expected it to be, but I would just keep aware for all the BDB fan's out there who haven't gotten to this book yet: be prepared. Things won't be as good as the first eight books or even the first five, which were my absolute favorite!

Read, but be cautious about what will be found.

Alyssa Matthews thought she had an explanation for everything. After all, as a slightly sceptical paranormal investigator that was what she was used to doing; researching, observing and explaining.

So when she began writing a paper about a long forgotten case of death by Spontaneous Human Combustion, she assumed it would be a run-of-the-mill piece. Little did she realise that she was about to be plunged into a situation that would not only force her to question her own sanity, but also her scepticism about the nature of the paranormal.

Not to mention the dreams that just wouldn’t go away...

Another overdue review. Honestly, I don't really know what to say about this book. There are a lot of things I cannot do: zombies and ghosts. Mostly because I believe that the former can happen and I believe that the latter exist. Call me paranoid, but that's what I believe.

So, I found myself jumping in a lot of places when it came to reading this book. For one, I refused to read it at night, and two it freaked me out. I'm just glad that the dark parts did not overshadow the entire novel. There was some light in it!

Needless to say, this was different from what I read. It started out slow and I had a bad feeling that I would probably have to end up skimming the rest of the novel, but luckily I give a book at least fifty percent before I do, so I'm just glad this book picked up.

The love story was interesting (a little quick, but I'll give it a break since this wasn't a terribly long story). And I think I liked the supporting characters just a little more. They were the usual, very supporting, best friend type, but it worked for this book.

Surprisingly, I even found myself in tears sometimes. And laughing and mad and just having a general reaction instead of boredom! And that was enough to convince me to give this book a good four-stars. While there were things I wish I could have seen, like more development with Alyssa, I think overall this novel wasn't so bad.

Thorne did a wonderful job with this novel!

Coffeehouse Angel by Suzanne Selfors

Title: Coffeehouse Angel
Author: Suzanne Selfors
Info: Website | Facebook
Release Date: July 21st, 2009
Publisher: Walker Childrens
Pages: 276
Format: Kindle
Acquired: Bought
Age Group: Young Adult

From the author of Saving Juliet comes a romantic comedy that is good to the last drop. When Katrina spots a homeless guy sleeping in the alley behind her grandmother’s coffee shop, she decides to leave him a cup of coffee, a bag of chocolate-covered coffee beans, and some pastries to tide him over. Little does she know that this random act of kindness is about to turn her life upside down.  Because this adorable vagrant, Malcolm, is really a guardian angel on a break between missions. And he won’t leave until he can reward Katrina’s selflessness by fulfilling her deepest desire. Now if only she could decide what that might be . .

I'm pretty sure I saw this book back in high school, but I overlooked it even though the word "Coffee" was on the cover. But after I saw it on Kindle Deals for only $1.99, I thought, "Why not?"

This book is quirky, funny, and filled with amazingly colorful supporting characters. And not to mention: COFFEE!

I was glad that the book took me less than three hours to read and that it was original in a lot of ways I wasn't expecting.

What I wasn't happy about? First, Katrina. I like that she has a selfless nature and tries to put others before herself, but sometimes she can just a little annoying. She doesn't actually see all options and has a bad habit of giving up and then complains that she doesn't have any talent. When I read that I just wanted to roll my eyes and remind her that no one is perfect at anything and it was the thing that she didn't want to do (practice) that always led to her downfall.

Second, Vincent. I wanted to punch him. I really, really, really wanted to punch him. There was just something about him that I didn't like or understood and it just irritated me greatly.

But, Selfors made up for the two lacking main characters with really great supporting characters. It seemed that everyone else should have been the main character instead of Katrina and Vincent.

Another thing I didn't like is that I didn't know where I was! Selfors kept talking about how the main character comes from a Scandinavian background and lives in a little village. Yet, the way Selfors sets it up is that the main character lives in Denmark (where there is a real life Nordby) but the other keeps referencing Washington State. It wasn't until I did more digging that I saw that Selfors had put a Scandinavian village in Washington State. I really wish she had mentioned that and that I didn't have to go looking for it.

I wouldn't say this novel is an overall disappointment. While the first half upset me greatly, I did find some satisfaction in the last part where Katrina finally picked herself up.

As for the romance, well, I'm just glad that it wasn't so obvious. It left a little air of mystery and a lot of surprises.

This was a quick and fun read.

When sixteen-year-old Tessa Gray crosses the ocean to find her brother, her destination is England, the time is the reign of Queen Victoria, and something terrifying is waiting for her in London's Downworld, where vampires, warlocks and other supernatural folk stalk the gaslit streets. Only the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the world of demons, keep order amidst the chaos.

Kidnapped by the mysterious Dark Sisters, members of a secret organization called The Pandemonium Club, Tessa soon learns that she herself is a Downworlder with a rare ability: the power to transform, at will, into another person. What’s more, the Magister, the shadowy figure who runs the Club, will stop at nothing to claim Tessa's power for his own.

Friendless and hunted, Tessa takes refuge with the Shadowhunters of the London Institute, who swear to find her brother if she will use her power to help them. She soon finds herself fascinated by—and torn between—two best friends: James, whose fragile beauty hides a deadly secret, and blue-eyed Will, whose caustic wit and volatile moods keep everyone in his life at arm's length . . . everyone, that is, but Tessa. As their search draws them deep into the heart of an arcane plot that threatens to destroy the Shadowhunters, Tessa realizes that she may need to choose between saving her brother and helping her new friends save the world. . . . and that love may be the most dangerous magic of all

It's not a secret that Cassandra Clare is my woman; The Mortal Instrument series is one of the best books that have walked into my life. And now I can get more!! While I'm waiting for the movie and the last book in TMI, I started this series. I told myself that I wouldn't read it until I finished TMI, but I had bought it and I couldn't just let it sit there on my Nook, along with the other unread books on my Nook, completely neglected. And not to mention I was going through Shadowhunter withdrawal and they say that patience is virtue (sadly I'm going to hell because patience is not in my vocabulary) so took my chances and just started this novel.

And I loved it! Cassandra Clare is amazing in just about everything and you can still hear the wonderful voice that she presents in TMI even here.

Tessa was amazing. She took everything that happened to her in stride, even discovering who she was.

It took me a moment (and possibly some online research) in order to remind myself who was who and what family names were still there. Like the Lightwoods and the Wayland and Heronald, and all the other names that I can't think of right now.

There was action in every corner and the story gets complicated and intriguing at every step of the way. I was biting my nail and hoping for the best. I was freaking out (and it didn't help that I was reading this at night) and overall, I just didn't want the story to end!

Will is a lot like Jace (stubborn, loving in the most difficult way) but there were moments of him that I was really shocked by the way he behaved. He was like Jace only ten times worse. It was like he refused to be loved or let anyone know him. I think it'll be really interesting getting into his mind.

Jem and Tessa and Charlotte were my favorite three. I absolutely couldn't stand Jessamine. I tried to understand her and see it from her point of view, but it was not easy looking passed her selfish nature.

And like always, Clare has a way to keep us all on our toes. Some of the surprises were just that, surprises. I didn't see a lot of it coming and even now as I tried to come up predictions for book two, I have a feeling that Clare will lead me down one road and just when I think I'm getting to the end of it...BAM! Hits me with something I was not prepared for.

I'm so excited and I just wish this series weren't a trilogy (what can I say, Clare spoils us too much).

I'm so giddy right now I can't even explain. At least I won't have to wait a year for the last book (unlike some other series *cough*TMI*cough*) so it'll be interesting to see how things will work out!

Lily Sanderson has a secret, and it’s not that she has a huge crush on gorgeous swimming god Brody Bennett, who makes her heart beat flipper-fast. Unrequited love is hard enough when you’re a normal teenage girl, but when you’re half human, half mermaid like Lily, there’s no such thing as a simple crush.

Lily’s mermaid identity is a secret that can’t get out, since she’s not just any mermaid – she’s a Thalassinian princess. When Lily found out three years ago that her mother was actually a human, she finally realized why she didn’t feel quite at home in Thalassinia, and she’s been living on land and going to Seaview high school ever since, hoping to find where she truly belongs. Sure, land has its problems – like her obnoxious, biker boy neighbor Quince Fletcher – but it has that one major perk – Brody. The problem is, mermaids aren’t really the casual dating type – when they “bond,” it’s for life.

When Lily’s attempt to win Brody’s love leads to a tsunami-sized case of mistaken identity, she is in for a tidal wave of relationship drama, and she finds out, quick as a tailfin flick, that happily-ever-after never sails quite as smoothly as you planned.

I wasn't sure what to expect. I honestly bought this book for the cover, which I know is kind of bad, but it was pretty! Anyways, I was surprised just how much I actually enjoyed this story.

And I wasn't too upset about Lily's self-centered nature, only because she grew a lot in the end, which I was glad.

Now, I'm not completely obsessed with mermaids. I think they're pretty cool and if someone gave me the option to be a mermaid or a human, I'd chose the fins (even though I'm not a fan of fish).

The story was a lot of fun and Quince is by far my favorite in the story. I wish I had a guy like him, so sweet and caring.

It was a simple story that ended much too soon for me, and also my first book from Childs. I can't wait to read the rest of the series and a little bit more from her. If there was ever a story that would be quick and fun to read, this is it!

I'd say, go for it.

Evie O'Neill has been exiled from her boring old hometown and shipped off to the bustling streets of New York City--and she is pos-i-toot-ly thrilled. New York is the city of speakeasies, shopping, and movie palaces! Soon enough, Evie is running with glamorous Ziegfield girls and rakish pickpockets. The only catch is Evie has to live with her Uncle Will, curator of The Museum of American Folklore, Superstition, and the Occult--also known as "The Museum of the Creepy Crawlies."
When a rash of occult-based murders comes to light, Evie and her uncle are right in the thick of the investigation. And through it all, Evie has a secret: a mysterious power that could help catch the killer--if he doesn't catch her first.

I loved this book I hated the main character. Does that make sense? I don't know, but that's how I feel. If there was ever a moment when I really wanted for a character to disappear it is now. Evie is probably the most selfish, self-centered, careless, reckless, uncontrollable, loud character that I have ever read. But, I did love the story.

I continued to read it because the story was original and it was good. I loved the style that Bray used and how she formatted the story. It was interesting seeing the different story lines that went on and how they later ended up connecting.

The different characters added so many colors to the story. And by the time I was done I was already speaking like them. Glad I got rid of that though.

Bray must have obviously done a lot of research and it shows. The entire story came to life with all the historical facts and not to mention the mystery that was involved.

I can't wait to read more! The only disappointment that I have is Evie's lack of growth. There wasn't much character development. She was still the same bratty kid that started in the story. I was hoping for a little more but I guess that'll just have to wait. I wasn't expecting though the way things ended up for Evie, but I'm kind of glad.

It was a great story and I am so glad I read this!!

Art student and monster's apprentice Karou finally has the answers she has always sought. She knows who she is—and what she is. But with this knowledge comes another truth she would give anything to undo: She loved the enemy and he betrayed her, and a world suffered for it.

In this stunning sequel to the highly acclaimed Daughter of Smoke & Bone, Karou must decide how far she'll go to avenge her people. Filled with heartbreak and beauty, secrets and impossible choices, Days of Blood & Starlight finds Karou and Akiva on opposing sides as an age-old war stirs back to life.

While Karou and her allies build a monstrous army in a land of dust and starlight, Akiva wages a different sort of battle: a battle for redemption. For hope.

But can any hope be salvaged from the ashes of their broken dream?

I am speechless. I am completely and utterly speechless. Not really, since I do have stuff to say about this book, but wow.

When I read the first book I thought that nothing could ever top this. Taylor as such a way with writing, there's this poetic nature to it, and I think that's the initial appeal to me about that book. So, when I read this book I could not believe how well Taylor kept the voices of Karou and Akiva alive. Her poeticness traveled across and held strong.

I was so mad at Akiva and Karou. I wanted the best for them but at the same time I knew that wouldn't be possible because of all that happened between them. Still, I have hope. And hope is the main theme of the series. It spreads across the pages, dancing into the minds of the readers as they soak in all that occurs.

What I found interesting is that I can't be mad at one or the either, I have to be furious at both. They both did things that were unpleasant but they felt were necessary or at least tricked into thinking it was necessary. They were both placed into difficult situations that neither were prepared for. And the events that played out, the foreshadowing of what will most likely happen in the last book, and the revelations that occurred just took me by surprise.

I was not expecting so much. There was never a moment when I wanted to put the book down and never pick up again. Action occurred on every page and brought the story to life.

The sacrifices that were made, the heartache, the sadness, the hallow victories, the choices - everything fell into place. There were so many moments when Taylor took me by surprise; jaw-dropping moments, to be more specific.

I didn't want to the story to end. The atmosphere that Taylor creates in her world takes hold and never wants to let you go - and to some extent you don't want to leave. I know I didn't. And even though Karou and Akiva are anything but fully human, they make choices and mistakes just like us; they have failures and heartbreaks, and I'm sure that this is the only reason why they seemed so alive. Taylor creates memorable, realistic characters/world.

And as for the surprise twist? I love how they didn't just come out of nowhere; the moments were coming and the readers knew. Just not knowing exactly how things would play out.

Honestly, Taylor has probably written my favorite book of the year. I am so glad I finally read it. When is book 3 coming?!!!! I need it now!!!!

Dangerous to be together. Painful to be apart. Savannah Colbert knows she broke up with Tristan Coleman for the right reasons. Most of all, to keep from killing him with her new vampire abilities. But try telling her heart. Now, lost in a sea of hostile Clann faces, Sav tries to come to terms with what she's becoming and what that means for her future. And that someone is doing their best to bully her into making a terrible mistake.

Tristan can't believe Sav won't even talk to him. If being apart is her decision, fine. Just don't expect him to honor it. But even as he prepares to fight for the girl he loves, forces beyond their control take them both in directions neither could have foreseen or prepared for.

A reckoning is coming… and not everyone will survive

Wow. Just wow. This book - Goodness.

Well, to start with, the cover. Yikes. If I hadn't read the first book and loved it, I might have been reluctant to read the series just looking at the second book. I am someone who judges a book by the cover, sadly, and this would have turned me away. Compared to the other book, where the cover was much more serene and matched the story. This, this scares me a little. She looks like she's come back from the dead and if I were to judge what the story were about I would probably think some weird zombie book.

Cover aside, the story was just as good, if not better than the first. Savannah and Tristan have been pulled apart and now the two have to find a way to get back together, but sadly that looks like that will be tougher than expected.

I was laughing, I was crying, and I was doing a whole lot of wondering as I read. Sometimes I felt like the story would never move forward and the characters would be stuck in this poor state they were in (loving each other but not being able to be together) but Darnell never fails.

Honestly, I am so glad that I started reading this book series.

For months Clara Gardner trained to face the fire from her visions, but she wasn't prepared for the choice she had to make that day. And in the aftermath, she discovered that nothing about being part angel is as straightforward as she thought.

Now, torn between her love for Tucker and her complicated feelings about the roles she and Christian seem destined to play in a world that is both dangerous and beautiful, Clara struggles with a shocking revelation: Someone she loves will die in a matter of months. With her future uncertain, the only thing Clara knows for sure is that the fire was just the beginning.

I tried, I really did, I tried to wait until the paperback to come out before reading this but I could not do it! I just couldn't! I fell in love with the first book and I had to have more! Finally, I just gave up and got it and I read it in one day and I have no regrets!

Okay, well, I did sort of have some regrets reading this book. I was super upset with Clara the majority of the book. She tells Tucker everything! Like, have you heard of keeping secrets, especially those that aren't yours to share? Apparently Clara hasn't. I just wanted to punch this woman. I'm glad she didn't grow into being one of those woman that depended so much on the guy, but talk about selfish! If there's a prize for selfishness, Clara would win it hands down.

And now I'm making it sound bad, I know I am, because you know, it wasn't so bad. At least she realized her selfish nature and realized what worrying about herself and Tucker and no one else was doing to her. I hated the way things turned out with her brother, Jeffery. I just wanted the two of them to kiss and makeup but there's just a lot with Jeffery that unsettles me and I wouldn't be surprised by the outcome of it all in the third book.

And since I'm not the last person on Earth to read this series I can finally say, TEAM CHRISTIAN! with so much joy. Obviously there isn't really much of a "team" thing going on in this book. It's obvious who she ends up with - the "team" thing was just for me, I am not embarrassed! If Hand even thinks about moving my girl over to someone else, I am going to go insane and possibly homicidal.

I loved this book, I really did. There were a lot of things that upset me, true, and it did take until near the end for things to really get started but once it did I was just, "Thank you!" because I know this could mean good things for the third book.

I have to wonder though just where this Black Wing thing is going. I mean, I feel like there should be a war since they are the bad guys and I feel like one may be coming but at the same time Hand is not doing a very good job of building it up. It feels like these two beings are just running around in circles, especially with the way things ended in this book.

Overall, I say read it! Because if you loved the first one you will love the second one.

Aria Rose, youngest scion of one of Mystic City's two ruling rival families, finds herself betrothed to Thomas Foster, the son of her parents' sworn enemies. The union of the two will end the generations-long political feud—and unite all those living in the Aeries, the privileged upper reaches of the city, against the banished mystics who dwell below in the Depths. But Aria doesn't remember falling in love with Thomas; in fact, she wakes one day with huge gaps in her memory. And she can't conceive why her parents would have agreed to unite with the Fosters in the first place. Only when Aria meets Hunter, a gorgeous rebel mystic from the Depths, does she start to have glimmers of recollection—and to understand that he holds the key to unlocking her past. The choices she makes can save or doom the city—including herself.

I have no idea why I waited so long to read this book. It should have crawled its way to the top of my To-Read pile long ago!

From page one until the end this book had my attention going and I couldn't stop reading. In one sitting I finished this beautiful tale that completely swept me away with Lawrence's beautiful writing style and very realistic characters! And the best part? The way he wove paranormal into the dystopian world and made something completely original!

The tale begins with Aria Rose, the young daughter of a powerful family in New York City's dystopian future. Global warming has taken place and the majority of the streets are flooded with water, and the seat for mayor of the city is up for grabs. But the political weave is complicated when a group of citizens, called mystics, are involved. These mystics hold power that Aria's father drains in order to keep the city energized.

Aria is suffering from memory loss and her family keeps convincing her that she is in love with her family's rival, Thomas Foster, but something in the story that they told her leaves Aria feeling doubtful. And then she meets Hunter, and her entire world is shifted around.

Now Aria begins to unravel the tangled weave that her family has created in order to uncover not just her lost memories, but as well as come to terms with all those that she loves and lives with.

This book completely took me by surprise. I couldn't believe some of the things that Lawrence threw into this novel. The way he developed the characters were both real and sometimes even scary, just because that is how people behave.

He struck deeply not only with the global warming that is going on right now, but as well as political battles that take place everyday and people don't even know! And I could very much relate to Aria. I felt for her and everything that went on around her. A daughter one minute to a political pawn the next.

This world came alive and whether or not it could actually happen is something that is unknown, but I don't doubt for a second that there was some truth in Lawrence's novel.

This book is one that should be put on someone's TBR list. I am so glad I read it and I can't wait to go out and get myself a copy because this is a book that belongs on everyone's bookshelves.

And be aware that it isn't just the political games that are being played that take center stage. The romance between the two protagonist was so cute and one could just feel how real their love is. And the best part is that it wasn't even insta-love! They actually got the chance to know each other and relate, despite differences!

Theo Lawrence is officially a favorite and I will have to keep my eyes on him!

A Hunger Like No Other by Kresley Cole

A mythic warrior who'll stop at nothing to possess her . . .

After enduring years of torture from the vampire horde, Lachlain MacRieve, leader of the Lykae Clan, is enraged to find the predestined mate he's waited millennia for is a vampire. Or partly one. This Emmaline is a small, ethereal half Valkyrie/half vampire, who somehow begins to soothe the fury burning within him.

A vampire captured by her wildest fantasy . . .

Sheltered Emmaline Troy finally sets out to uncover the truth about her deceased parents -- until a powerful Lykae claims her as his mate and forces her back to his ancestral Scottish castle. There, her fear of the Lykae -- and their notorious dark desires -- ebbs as he begins a slow, wicked seduction to sate her own dark cravings.

An all-consuming desire . . .

Yet when an ancient evil from her past resurfaces, will their desire deepen into a love that can bring a proud warrior to his knees and turn a gentle beauty into the fighter she was born to be?

This is the first book from Kresley Cole that I have read. I stumbled upon it when I was trying to order another book, and then I saw it again in the store, and that did it for me. I was shocked. I mean, I've read some interesting things, especially from Feehan, but this was a little jaw dropping.

When the story first opens up a war between race's is happening, and while I was really, really confused the majority of the time on exactly who was who and what was what. This book, technically, is the second, with a short story being the unofficial official first book, but still I think reader's could keep up nicely.

I have been told that as the story progresses all the characters and all the immortals involved do start to straighten up a little. And not to mention the plot lines becomes clearer as well as just what was going on. There was a little glossary that I had to keep referring to, which I found both helpful and annoying. I just want to read the story not have to flip changes to figure out what's going on.

I absolutely loved how Cole puts the reader directly into the story like it is no one's business. I was a little frustrated trying to catch up, but as soon as the rhythm got going then things started to clear up.

I loved the passion between the Lachline and Emmaline, and the history of Emmaline herself. I cannot wait for the rest of this series because I have a feeling that I am going to love it! I already love this book and Cole is on my Must-Read List now!

Rating: 5 Stars

Meghan Chase is finally getting used to being the Iron Queen, ruler of the Iron Fey. Her life may be strange, but with former Winter prince Ash by her side at last, she wouldn’t have it any other way.

But when they travel to the Summer and Winter courts’ gathering for Elysium, the oracle from Meghan’s past returns with a dire prophecy: “What you carry will either unite the courts, or it will destroy them.” Now Meghan faces a devastating choice that may determine the future of all fey—and her and Ash’s unborn child…

Honestly, am I the only one that thinks that Kagawa should write a separate series featuring Kierran? Unless, he's in the spin-off series featuring Ethan Chase...either way, this novella was epic!

Obviously this review won't be as long, but I absolutely loved seeing Meghan again and Ash! I could die happy. There are so many ways that these things can go between them all, I feel like Kagawa should not stop now.

I have never really read a novella before, but the way that Kagawa set this up I was impressed. I never knew one could put so much in such a short time span. And there was so much I was so angry that it stopped where it did, but again, it leaves so much room for possibilities!

And now that I have the entire collection on paperback, I can finally go back and enjoy some of them! Kagawa, thank you! I love this so much. This is amazing!! I going to review the entire book when I finished the other two novellas, but I just couldn't resist doing this one since I haven't exactly read the other ones yet.

But I will get to them, even if I have to sacrifice precious study time. I don't think I will ever get tired of these guys. And the growth that Meghan experiences. Being Queen looks good on her, that's all I must say to that! And Ash, oh goodness, how I missed him!

This was such a beautiful novella. Even though it was short, there was absolutely nothing miss from it that the other books had that this didn't. Kagawa knows how to bring in a reader and keep them.

Calla has always welcomed war.

But now that the final battle is upon her, there's more at stake than fighting. There's saving Ren, even if it incurs Shay's wrath. There's keeping Ansel safe, even if he's been branded a traitor. There's proving herself as the pack's alpha, facing unnamable horrors, and ridding the world of the Keepers' magic once and for all. And then there's deciding what to do when the war ends. If Calla makes it out alive, that is.

I have come to the end...of Calla's story anyways. It seems like not to long ago I just started the first book and was swept away into this world of Guardians and Searchers going up against the powerful Keepers. Maybe because it was a few days ago, but anyways, I feel like I have a book hangover now.

I can't say that I was too disappointed. I'm glad that Cremer kept up the fast paced and I'm glad that she showed Calla's own little love triangle...though not really a triangle because it was obvious who Calla would end up with anyways. But...I won't lie, I felt like the fighting scene was just...eh.

Calla is the narrator, I get that, so obviously the only way we would know what would happen is through her eyes. I feel like this book, though, should have been told in third person, because all I got through Calla's narration is that most of the wolves were standing around watching others fight. Yeah, they got their hands dirty, but not as much as I would expect from someone who prides herself in being a warrior.

Not to mention Shay did his own standing around as well, even though he was the reason this whole thing was coming to blows. I don't know, I just didn't like that at all.

The story itself, before the final scene, was amazing. I loved how Cremer gave a broader view of the world and showed us more Guardians and what other Keepers around the world did. I also liked that she didn't make it easy on the character's when trying to receive the Elemental Cross.

And to say that I was stunned by how things turned out would be an understatement. It's clear and maybe understandable, but it still left me with my mouth open. And made me like Sabine a little more.

I haven't read the first book in the prequel but I could very well see a spin-off sequel series with the other Searchers. Who knows, maybe this world isn't done with yet.

Fantastic read all around, I truly did enjoy this book.

John Matthew has come a long way since he was found living among humans, his vampire nature unknown to himself and to those around him. After he was taken in by the Brotherhood, no one could guess what his true history was- or his true identity. Indeed, the fallen Brother Darius has returned, but with a different face and a very different destiny. As a vicious personal vendetta takes John into the heart of the war, he will need to call up on both who he is now and who he once was in order to face off against evil incarnate.

Xhex, a symphath assassin, has long steeled herself against the attraction between her and John Matthew. Having already lost one lover to madness, she will not allow the male of worth to fall prey to the darkness of her twisted life. When fate intervenes, however, the two discover that love, like destiny, is inevitable between soul mates

John, oh my John. It's strange, but I'm actually not as in love with him as others are. My heart belongs to only one brother and that's Rhage, but most seem crazy about John. I think it has a lot to do with the whole mute thing. They see a vulnerability and they just fall for it, or something like that. But, anyways, I don't hate him either. He's cute, I'll give him that.

Well, anyways, this story was great and different. I loved the way things start to shift and get a closer look at Xhex, the first female fighter the Brothers have had to deal with. She is strong, independent, and headstrong, and I think that works to both her advantage and disadvantage. Her advantage, because she is able to go out in the daylight and she's sneaky so its difficult for her to be found. But, disadvantage because its obviously going to take a lot of work for John and Xhex to find balance. John still has this overprotective side to him when it comes to her.

Though, the way they work together is amazing.

And, at one point, I actually felt sorry for Lash. Not only do the number of people that are after him could make up a village, now he has an added problem that just, honestly, confuses me. I really don't know what to make of him or anything. I won't hesitate to say though that he had it coming.

Honestly, I'm amazed I made it this far and I'm still loving the books. Ward is very consist, and for a series this big with so many story lines I could just imagine how the planning goes. I would probably lose my head in all honesty. And she keeps up with the next-story setting, or at least that's what I call it. Her books just have a way to set the stage for the next book to come, and I wish I had seen a little bit more of Payne, but instead she just jumped in and started on Blay and Qhuinn, in my opinion. I mean, their important obviously, but there's still two more books before them so give us time, Ward, please.

And on that note, there's also the problem that John and Xhex didn't get much of a spotlight, or at least the way that past books have put attention to the main couple. I mean, I still remember when back in Dark Lover the story was centrally about Wrath and Beth. But, I guess the story has increased and a lot is really taking place.

Overall, this story was amazing. John was a complete joy to read and Xhex was just as stressful as she promised to be from a glimpse of the passed books.

This book series keeps getting hotter and hotter. And when the ending comes, whenever that will be, I'm sure that Ward will leave us with an epic ending! Until then, enjoy the changes and the way things are progressing.
